You Are Both Amazing and Awkward

I listened to Brooke Castillo’s podcast today where she said you are both awesome and awful. This is my take on the same idea. What if we gave ourselves permission, on the regular, to be good at some things and suck at others? Having things that we have yet to master allows us to have areas of growth.

Another idea that Brooke shared was the concept that the goal is not to become perfect but to become more of ourselves.

Love the idea of being able to take all of me and just become more of that which is accepting of my weaknesses as well as my greatness.

The top picture above was taken the year that I started running on the regular. I became addicted pretty early on. The relay I participated in was somewhat of a fluke. There is no way I would have considered running two days straight with a team of 12 for a total of like 18 miles….buuuut, we had a friend who had a team who had lost a few members and were desperate to fill their team. My husband said yes first and then one day out of the blue I decided to try running 9 miles straight. {a first for me} After doing so, I thought, “I can totally run that relay.” I signed up. And it was a phenom experience. To read about the run that converted me to the love of running click here…also part of this relay.

A few months after this race, I was talking to my sister’s neighbor, Peggy, who also happened to be a seasoned marathon runner. I was in awe at this point of anyone capable of running 26.2 miles. Somewhere in the course of our conversation she shared with me that she did a walk/run method every time she completed a marathon. What?!! I had to know more about this. She directed me to Jeff Galloway and his book, Marathon, You can do it! Which I promptly purchased and studied. The moment that I realized that I could actually WALK and run a marathon I could see possibility. I went on to run 4 marathons and several halfs using the run/walk method. All I needed was for someone to suggest an idea that felt doable for me and then give myself permission to follow through with the concept. Peggy was the first person to give me permission to walk on my runs. After she did so, I embraced the idea for myself.

I want to give you permission to live out the full human experience without self doubt and judgement. I want to suggest that you replace doubt and judgement with curiosity and compassion.

I promise this is not an entrance to slack off school. On the contrary, as you embrace yourself and all that makes you who you are, you will be able to embody the amazing quality of humility. You will also be granted the super power of loving others with zero judgement. Additionally, when you are in the headspace that “nothing has gone wrong here” you will find it easier to be motivated, to not berate yourself when you choose something that does not align with your long term goals. It will be so much easier to pick yourself up off the ground and show up the next time because maybe, just maybe, amazing is going to be available for you.

Humility, Love for others, Motivated, Resilience: pretty powerful results just for stepping into your amazing and awkward.
