Costco Life Lessons

Yesterday as I finished loading up my car with all things Costco, I made the trek across the parking lot to return my cart. As I pushed it towards the employee gathering up the carts he said, “Don’t forget your olive oil!” There, on the bottom of my cart was the olive oil.

I thanked him for seeing what I hadn’t seen. I said, “I’m so glad you were out here to point that out to me.”

And, of course, my life coach brain went off. Helping others see what they aren’t able to see from their current perspective is exactly what I do when I coach my clients. For me, I was certain I had unloaded all of my groceries but there it was…from my perspective the olive oil had not been visible.

At the risk of over analyzing the 100% Italian Olive oil, I did remember that as I was unloading onto the belt at check out the cashier said….just as I was bending down for the olive oil…”Don’t worry about that, I’ll get it.” And I thought…well, the olive oil isn’t big like the other stuff down there and I don’t want it to get overlooked. I didn’t listen to myself which resulted in my overlooking said oil. Have you done something similar where you listen to to others and quiet your own voice? I have been aware of these types of self muffling lately and I am trying to make a conscious effort to change that.

I thought it might be helpful for me to share some basic Costco/Life hacks I have learned.

TRUTH: I really don’t like going to Costco.

It is too big.

You are forced to buy more than you need.

And everything is heavy.

For years I refused to go for the above reasons. Somehow I was reminded that Costco does have advantages and now here I am a regular Costco customer. Ahem..

I have come up with a few basics that help make Costco trips bearable for me.

  1. Keep reusable grocery bags in your trunk and then load the Costco items into bags so it is easier to carry in the house. {This also allows you to organize items which helps in putting groceries away}

  2. I say “no” to the boxes Costco offers. Too heavy. Too much to recycle.

  3. Always take or wear a jacket into Costco. Even if it is 100 degrees outside.

  4. Start with putting the big heavy stuff in your cart first.

  5. Decide before you go: is this going to be a browse through Costco and do some leisurely shopping or is this a “stick to the list” kind of day.

That’s it. Hoping these tips help you and if not…figure out what does work for you.

And if you’d like me to help you see what’s hiding from your view on the bottom of your cart…go to my home page and click on “schedule a session”.
